This week we will be focusing on the following content in class:

4th/5th ELA: Students will be continuing their dedicated work on their Personal Narratives. We will finish drafting attention grabbing leads before moving into focusing on drafting.
6th ELA: Students will be focusing on their Persuasive Essays. They will finish any unfinished work relating to the essay project, before spending time focusing on this week’s assignments. Students main goal should be finishing their planning stage before moving into their drafting.

Students will also begin a data research project where they find the playoff stats for great NBA players and compare them through a series of bar graphs and histograms.

Week of October 5 - October 9
October 5, 2020
Hello Ray Families,
Welcome to week 5 of our 2020-2021 school year! It is my hope that all of my students are feeling comfortable with the format of our remote learning setting by this point. I know it is probably still a bit confusing and overwhelming as is natural. I will do everything in my power though to continue learning and growing to ensure I am making this a meaningful experience for each of them. If assignments feel too overwhelming or if there is anything I can personally do to help your student, please reach out to me.
As we are looking at this week, we will be continuing full steam ahead with our content and curriculum.
In Language Arts, students will be focusing on understanding character traits, settings, and events in reading. In writing, 4th and 5th grade are continuing their work on personal narratives. They will be focusing this week on their prewriting before moving into their drafting stage. For 6th grade, students are focusing on argumentative writing. They have just begun selecting their topic of choice and also beginning the prewriting phase of the writing process before we focus on drafting.
In math, 4th and 5th grade are focusing on place value. This week specifically we will be focusing on rounding as well as inequalities. Once we finish our section on inequalities, then we will have a quiz review before hopefully having our place value quiz beginning of next week. For 6th grade, I am assisting students with their practice and knowledge of dot plots and histograms.
Grades will be updated by Wednesday, October 7. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns!

As we are continuing to adjust to these new expectations and experiences, I again want to thank each and every one of you for your support thus far. Everything we are doing is not possible without your help.
This week we will continue with our pursuit to become fully comfortable with our remote learning setting and expectations. I will again continue to review classroom assignments, websites we will be using (such as ReadTheory & IXL), and continuing in our pursuit of knowledge with content based instruction as well.

We will continue daily reading as it aids in skill building required by students. We will continue using ReadTheory this week, which will give students passages at their individual reading level with associated comprehension quizzes.
In math for 4th & 5th grades, we will begin the week with a quiz on Addition & Subtraction to close our first chapter. Then we will begin our next chapter which focuses on Place Value. Students will continue their daily math practice which allows them to practice past learned skills.
For both ELA & math, I will also be reviewing IXL this week. It is a website which allows me to assign specific skills to students for them to get more practice with (which can also be differentiated between students).

September 21, 2020
Hello Ray Families,
I hope you all are having a great start to our new school year. I have been so thankful for all of the student, parent, and staff involvement in my classroom so far this year. I know things are chaotic and getting used this new setting with all of these new expectations can be challenging. Please know that I appreciate each and every one of you!
This week it is my plan that we continue our pursuit of getting comfortable with this remote learning setting with our schedules. I will be continuing to review classroom assignments, websites we will be using (such as IXL & ReadTheory), and continuing in our pursuit of knowledge with content based instruction as well.
In ELA, it is my hope that we will complete Wilson testing this week. Once that is complete, I would like to begin small group instruction, this will involve a rotation of different group activities/lessons that I will be filtering through. We will continue daily reading as it aids in skill building required by students. We will begin using ReadTheory this week, which begins by giving students a reading placement assessment. After they complete that, it will give them reading passages at their current skill level with attached comprehension quizzes.
In math for 4th & 5th grades, we will be continuing our practice/review of addition and subtraction with regrouping. Students will be taking an assessment following the completion of this chapter (which may be late this week or early next week). Students will continue their daily math practice which allows them to practice past learned skills.
For both ELA & math, I will also be introducing IXL this week. It is a website which allows me to assign specific skills to students for them to get more practice with (which can also be differentiated between students).
I look forward to another great week! Please reach out with any questions you have for me!

Hello Ray Families,
Thank you all for your hard work and dedication, it made our first week back to school that much more of a success! My main focus is connecting with students and their families, everyone getting comfortable in our classroom and getting to know each other, as well as understanding our technology that we will be using to facilitate learning in our remote learning environment. I know there will still be challenges, frustrations, and issues this week. I will be forgiving and understanding, and I hope you will do the same. For any immediate help, please try CPS Online Reopening Guide support page. There are plenty of background documents and forms for review and use for planning and compliance.
This week I would like to start with a focus on Wilson testing in ELA to start getting ready to begin our phonics instruction in class. In math, it is my hope that we can begin getting familiar with IXL (used for both math & ELA), the platform I am hoping to have students using during individual/asynchronous learning.
On Thursday, students will be meeting with Principal Neely, who will hold a Town Hall with 4th Grade students at 9:00 am, and 5th/6th Grade students at 9:30 am.
Please reach out with any questions you have for me!
Yours Truly,
Ms. Montney

Week of September 8 - 11
September 8, 2020
Hello Ray Families,
I am really looking forward to being back and getting to work with you and your student. I would like to officially welcome you back to this new and very unusual school year. This week my main goal will be all of us getting to know each other, connecting with students and their families, and learning how to use the technology that will be vital in our success this year. I am also planning on incorporating some time for assessments throughout this week and next to see what each of our students needs which will guide my instruction for Quarter 1.
I know that we will no doubt have challenges, and frustrations while we are all trying to figure out this new way of learning. This will look a bit different even from last year's remote learning setting. I will be patient and flexible as we get used to this all. For immediate tech support try the CPS Online Reopening Guide.
I will be updating my blog weekly to ensure we are all on the same page. I will be including an overview of what we will be focusing on for the week, and any important announcements from administration. I will also include helpful links, documents, and resources, when they arise (I will also create a separate page for that soon). For the first week my main goal is just for students to get back into the swing of things and get familiar with some of the resources we will be using this school year such as Google Classroom, IXL, ReadTheory, and Aspen.
Please reach out with any and all questions and concerns. My email is [email protected]. I am also available everyday during my office hours from 1:45-2:45 pm, please email to set up an appointment.
I am looking forward to working with you and your students this school year!
Yours Truly,
Ms. Montney

Hello Ray Families,
My mother shared this poem with me today, and I thought it was very fitting for this school year that will no doubt be filled with questions and uncertainties. I wanted to share this poem with all of you as a reminder that we are all in this together. I hope you all get a restful night of sleep and I look forward to seeing my students tomorrow!
